11 Things to Do When You Can't Sleep (for Bloggers)

I’m sick! Okay that’s not exciting so much as sad and annoying, but a positive outlook is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The point is that my sickness has been keeping me up at night, and I’ve been doing my best not to get bored. Here’s how!

Write Some Stuff

Being awake into the wee hours of the morning gives you the time to really work on your writing skills. You can do something like write your first commercial ebook or work on submitting your fist 10 articles to ezinearticles.com to get backlinks.

Make a YouTube Video

Video marketing is a powerful way to build an audience. If you’re awake and don’t have anything better to do, why not crank out a few small tutorials or screencasts or ramblings? That’s how I get those Headway101 videos made.

Do Some Link Building

Some steps of building links are tedious, like submitting your articles to social sites like Inbound.org and BlogEngage. But there’s not a lot for you to do at 2am, probably, so why not start submitting your best stuff?

Network with the Other Side of the World

While I’m asleep in the USA, there’s a whole world of people awake and blogging in the UK, Asia, and Australia. Sometimes when I’m awake late at night, it’s the perfect time to check up on people like Craig Morton and see how the other half (of the planet) lives.


I have a pull-up bar in my apartment that I like to do pull-ups on when I get bored. You could also do some crunches, or learn how to do a push-up and do some of those.

Clean Your House/Office

A clean environment leads to a clear head. Put on Pandora and get vacuuming. Don’t forget to wash the pots and pans! It’s also a good time to clean out the closet. You haven’t worn that old T-shirt in months, so bag it up for a trip to Good Will in the morning.

Moderate Your Social Networking Profiles

That one guy who only tweets fart jokes probably isn’t doing much to improve your engagement or authority. Login to TwitCleaner and get rid of the robots and the eggs who haven’t tweet since 2008. Then head over to Facebook and delete that page for that project you said you’d “get around to” but never did.

Speed Up Your Computer

Shut down all your applications and run Clean My Mac (or the windows equivalent). Maybe take the time to uninstall those productivity apps that you haven’t opened and that haven’t actually made you any more productive.

Speed Up Your Websites

Spend some time to speed up your websites. Install CloudFlare, clean out extra database tables using PHPMyAdmin, and uninstall any plugins you don’t need.

Do Some Research

If you’ve got nothing better to do, go ahead and get that reading done. Maybe you’ve been putting off getting all the way through Scamworld or The Most Creative Link Building Post Ever. Dig through those RSS feeds and narrow down your “to read” list.

    Ooo. I love this. Thanks. I have a terrible habit of staying up until the wee hours. I know I could be productive, because I have been in the past, but it’s usually just me trying to find something useless to do while I try to get to sleep.
